Reading and Writing Interventions
Students struggle with reading and writing for a variety of reasons. Some students have a learning disability such as dyslexia or dysgraphia. Some may have a hard time due to underlying issues with Executive Function or Attention. Sarah will administer a thorough evaluation of your student’s current reading and writing abilities and create an individualized plan, focusing on your child’s specific area of need. Depending on the student, this plan may include training in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Sarah uses a variety of programs, including: Lindamood-Bell, Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, and Project Read.
Executive Function Support and Strategies
Classroom Support: Help students learn to recognize their strengths and weaknesses and develop self-advocacy skills. Work with students, parents, and teachers to ensure that EF needs are addressed at school.
Reading: Develop strategies for before, during, and after reading to promote comprehension and retention of information. Incorporate assistive technology for reading support when appropriate.
Writing: Teach the writing process in an individualized approach. Introduce technology such as text-to-speech and word-processing when appropriate. Teach strategies for breaking down large writing assignments.
Note-Taking: Train students in active note-taking skills from text and lectures using a master notebook system. Teach students to use note-taking technology such as Notability when appropriate.
Study Skills: Help students learn to manage time, materials, and space for studying and assignments. Teach techniques for organization, regular review, and self-testing of notes from lectures or reading.
Test Prep: Instruct students in test-taking strategies for multiple choice, short-answer, and essay tests. Train students to use anxiety-reducing techniques such as mindfulness and meditation.
IEP/504 Plan Advising
It is important to establish a positive working relationship with your school and keep track of your child’s progress. Sarah will review your child’s case and help you navigate the special education process in your public or private school. This may include planning and organization for meetings, attendance and note-taking at meetings, and follow-up support and organization of files.
Assistive Technology
Is your child utilizing appropriate tech tools in a way that makes sense, at school and at home? Sarah can help by performing a technology evaluation to determine your student’s needs, and training and support in using tech to make learning easier and more fun. Examples include: speech-to-print (dictation), print-to-speech (screen readers), online annotation, calendars, timers, and word processing.
